Kaymer's In Command at U.S. Open

(AP) Martin Kaymer still has a few more hours to sit on the comfortable six-shot lead he has at the U.S. Open before it's time to tee it up for another shot at Pinehurst No. 2.

That halfway lead ties the Open record co-held by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy who both went on to win the tournament.

Kaymer has built the lead by hitting 27 of 36 greens in regulation and 28 of 32 fairways. He has 18 one-putt greens and no three putts.

And the German has just one bogey on his card for two rounds.

More hot, dry weather is on tap today, which perhaps could harden up those turtleback greens making them tougher to hold.  That could open the door for Kaymer's challengers to close the gap.

U.S. Open rookie Brendon Todd will play in the final group with Kaymer.

Kevin Na and Brandt Snedeker are seven shots back in third place.
