Probing Cause of Fatal Piedmont Fire
PIEDMONT, Ala. (AP) -- State fire officials have yet to determine the cause of a fire that killed an infant in eastern Alabama.
Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown has said Korbyn Stitts of Piedmont died of smoke inhalation in a fire over the weekend. Fire Marshal Edward Paulk says further tests will help officials determine the cause of the blaze.
Investigators have said the homeowner and her four grandchildren were inside the house when the fire broke out. The woman said the flames spread quickly and prevented her from reaching the child.
Fire Chief Mike Ledbetter says parts of the house are still standing, although most of it was damaged by heat or smoke.
A funeral has been scheduled for Saturday at Thankful Baptist Church.
