Family of Six Escapes Burning Home
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A West Mobile family of six is displaced after a fire destroyed their home Saturday morning. Mobile Fire and Rescue said it happened at around 9 a.m. Even the Wilsons two cats and dogs survived the fire. The fire caused about $150,000 in damage to the five bedroom home near Magnolia Place and Hillcrest Road. Authorities said the majority of the damage occurred in the attic. Investigators are still figuring out the cause but believe electrical issues could be to blame.
It's all happened so fast. You wake up and the house is on fire! said young mom Chevy Wilson. I wouldn't trade any of my possessions for my daughter's safety anyways. So as long as she's fine.
Wilson and her 6 month old daughter live with her parents. She said she put her little one down for a nap while she was getting ready to go to the fair. That is when her mother realized something did not smell right.
She walked outside. She thought somebody lit their fire place or something, said Chevy Wilson.
Her father Don Wilson said, I grabbed a little old pot and filled it up with water, and I come running to the front door. I said I'll get it baby don't worry.
The fire was too much.
Eighteen year old Wilson said, I got the baby and was walking toward the back door then you could hear when the windows busting, and i knew it was spreading. By the time we walked around the whole front of the house was on fire.
Her brother was still upstairs fast asleep. She said her father Don braced the heat to go upstairs to rescue him.
Everybody is safe, but I was a hero I think of the whole thing, said Don Wilson.
Other heroes, neighbors and churches who showed compassion and love providing meals and clothing.
I didn't grab shoes. A family donated shoes to me this morning, said Chevy Wilson.
Don Wilson added, three different churches have stopped by. Our neighbors just moved in, and they've been so great to us.
The Wilsons said they have insurance and are staying with family at the moment.
