Key West Considers Monument to Diana Nyad
KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - Key West may be considering putting up a monument to endurance swimmer Diana Nyad.
Nyad staggered onto Smathers Beach on Labor Day after swimming more than 110 miles from Havana. City Manager Bob Vitas plans to discuss a possible Nyad monument at the beach at the city commission meeting Wednesday. No other details about Vitas' plans were immediately available.
The Key West Citizen reports that a recommendation from the Art in Public Places board calls for the city to announce a $5,000 international competition.
Board chairman Michael Shields says the shape of the monument would be up the artist.
Nyad completed the swim from Cuba to Florida on her fifth try, becoming the first person confirmed to have made the swim without a shark cage.
