High Speed Chase Ends in Bay Minette
BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WPMI) A high speed chase came to a crashing end in Bay Minette Wednesday morning. Authorities say two men took police on a wild ride that started in Mobile County. The pair are now behind bars.
Police say the driver has been identified as Dwight Singleton of Atlanta. The passenger, also from Atlanta, has been identified as Sydney Clark.
Both have an extensive drug related criminal record in Georgia.
It all started on Interstate 10 at Mcdonald Road in Mobile. Officers working the interstate noticed a small four door car weaving through traffic. The two men inside had no intention stopping.
"Deputies tried to stop the vehicle by initiating blue lights and sirens. At that point the driver refused to stop and sped up," said Sgt Joe Mahoney with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.
The suspects sped up to speeds of 100 mph or higher.
"Unfortunately when people do run all it's doing is putting themselves and others in danger because ultimately they are going to get caught," said Mahoney.
The reason for taking off, investigators say may have been drug related. During the chase the two men inside were tossing items out the of windows. It's something police say they see all too often.
"It appeared to be plastic bags which is consistent with narcotics from our experience," said Mahoney.
Inside the car officers recovered a 9mm handgun along with marijuana and what's described as a designer drug. Police found a stack of credit cards too.
Initially the two gave officers fake names.
The two suspects were taken to USA Medical Center suffering from non life threatening injuries.
Police further north on Interstate 65 were waiting with highway spikes.
Several dozen officers from Mobile to Bay Minette responded.
