Ala Sheriff Acquitted of Social Security Fraud
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A southwest Alabama sheriff says he is relieved after being acquitted of Social Security fraud charges in federal court.
A jury in Mobile returned the verdict in favor of Washington County Sheriff Richard Stringer on Friday.
Stringer says he knew he was innocent.
Stringer was indicted in July on charges of conspiring with others to fraudulently obtain Social Security benefits for an employee.
Federal prosecutors argued that Stringer was trying to help an old friend but in the process conspired and stole money from the government.
A former jailer and his wife pleaded guilty to receiving more than $6,000 through the scheme, but jurors found Stringer innocent.
Stringer says the allegations were part of a personal vendetta from an employee he fired last year.
