Ala. Lawmaker Looks to Tweak Purchase Regulations
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama lawmaker is proposing a bill to change rules governing the way state agencies purchase goods, like office supplies and furniture.
Republican state Sen. Arthur Orr of Decatur is proposing a bill that would allow state agencies to stray from a list of state contractors and buy goods from other companies if their prices are 10 percent or more lower than the statewide contract price.
Orr says he's asked directors of several departments whether they're satisfied with prices they're paying for office furniture and supplies and has heard complaints.
He says the bill is meant to give agencies more flexibility and the legislative fiscal office says the proposal could save the state $5 million to $7 million a year.
