Austal President On Navy Yard Shooting
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) The president of Austal USA in Mobile told Local 15 he was shocked to hear about the attack in D.C.
President Craig Perciavalle said security inside Washington's Navy Yard is extremely tight. He had planned to travel to D.C. Tuesday morning to meet with Navy officials, but that trip is on hold for now.
However, his attention is still focused on the tragedy up north. Because not only is the Navy Austal USA's only customer, Austal actually has an office just a few blocks away from the Navy Yard in Washington, but all its employees are safe.
The Navy Yard rampage claimed the lives of 12 victims and a gunman. As the story unfolded, revealing horrific details throughout the day, employees at Austal were glued to the developments on television.
"That really hits close to home for us. Because the program executive offices that we deal with on a daily basis are actually located in the Navy Yard, so a lot of folks here deal directly with employees and navy officers there on a daily basis. So our hearts and prayers go out to those folks as they deal with that horrific event," said Perciavalle.
Austal builds Joint High Speed and Littoral Combat Ship vessels for the Navy. Austal's President Craig Perciavalle planned to be inside the Navy Yard on Tuesday for an LCS change of command ceremony.
"But as of now I'm going to not go and let them focus on the more important things at hand," he said.
Around 150 Navy employees work on Austal's grounds.
"How it affects us I think time will tell, based what transpires from events up there and what is deemed the root cause as to how it was allowed to happen. So we'll be working closely with the Navy to learn all of that and we'll take appropriate actions to make sure that type of risk is reduced for us," said Perciavalle.
Perciavalle told Local 15 that when the news broke Monday morning, Austal went into a high alert security mode which basically means there's hightened awareness of everything going on.
