Council Set to Vote on Saenger Management
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI)
After years of management changes and losing money, could the city be on the cusp of success of Mobile's historic Saenger Theater.
The answer could come at Tuesday's city council meeting, when council memebers vote on a contract with two power players in the entertainment industry.
The proposal comes from SMG management company, already responsible for many city owned properities, and Huka Entertainement, a well known player in the concert booking industry.
They propose teaming together to bring affordable management and more bigger acts to the Saenger Theater.
SMG says, since they already have staff in place at places like the convention center, they can save money.
In fact, SMG is promising not to charge the city if they don't show a profit.
It's an approach welcomed by some council members and questioned by others.
The idea needs 5 votes to pass.
The director of Cultural and Civic Development, Bobby Bostiwick, says, if the measure doesn't pass, there are no other companies waiting in the wings to do the job.
