Microwave Could Be Your New Phone Charger
Microwaves may soon offer more than heat for last night's leftovers. For every minute running your microwave is slowly seeping out energy that could be used to run other electronics. A team at the University of Tokyo is researching harvesting the power leaking through your microwave. The team designed a small harvester with a microwave antenna which picks up energy from the microwave to generate an electric current. That current is sent to the device you're charging. Initial tests showed that running the microwave for just two minutes allowed kitchen devices to run; kitchen devices like a timer with small batteries for a small amount of time. The theory is if you leave these devices near the microwave for an extended period of time they would gradually charge each time the microwave was used. Would you charge your phone using a microwave?
