October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Dr. Windy Dean, medical oncologist at the Mitchell Cancer Institute joined the Local 15 News at Noon team Thursday.
She was representing the Joy to Life Foundation's Mobile chapter. It's a local charity that provides free mammograms to women in Mobile and Baldwin County who are uninsured or underinsured.
This year it is estimated nearly 40,000 women will die from breast cancer. This disease knows no boundary, not race, not color, nor social class. Yet, a mammogram can mean the difference between life and death.
Unfortunately, in Alabama countless women wont get one because they simply cant afford it. The Joy to Life Foundation understands the need and has already saved the lives of 25 women in our state.
Dr. Dean shared how those interested can help women our community by attending a fund raiser and play on the University of South Alabamas Laidlaw Theater on October 10, at 7 p.m.
The play is written by Sue Walker, a distinguished professor of creative writing at the University of South Alabama and also Alabamas Poet Laureate. It is about a single, divorced mother of a 12-year-old daughter who is diagnosed with breast cancer.
At this event Dr. Dean will be accepting a research award.
