Bentley sets election to replace Ala. Rep. Newton
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama's governor has scheduled a primary election for Dec. 3 to begin the process of replacing Democratic state Rep. Demetrius Newton of Birmingham, who died last week.
Gov. Robert Bentley announced Wednesday that a runoff will be held Jan. 28 if necessary and the general election will be March 25. If no runoff is needed, the general election will be moved up to Jan. 28.
Bentley said Democratic and Republican candidates have until Oct. 10 to sign up with their parties. Third-party and independent candidates have until Dec. 3 to turn in the voter signatures necessary to get on the ballot.
Newton represented House District 53, which covers part of Jefferson County.
