Recap: Detroit vs. Loyola-Chicago
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Eli Holman scored a team-high 20 points, leading five players in double figures, as Detroit defeated Loyola-Chicago, 80-71, in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament at Calihan Hall.
Also scoring in double digits for the third-seeded Titans (19-13) were Chase Simon with 19 points, Doug Anderson 18 and Ray McCallum and Jason Calliste with 10 points apiece.
The 10th-seeded Ramblers (7-23) were paced by Ben Averkamp who tallied 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Jordan Hicks pitched in with 14 points. Walt Gibler and Denzel Brito both added 12 points, but also turned the ball over three times apiece as the squad suffered 23 miscues on the night.
Detroit shot a mere 33.3 percent from the floor in the first half, but the hosts made up for it by knocking down all 13 attempts at the free-throw line, compared to just 2-of-6 at the stripe for the visitors, as the Titans put up a 34-23 lead at the break.
Both teams shot the ball well from the field in the second half, but even with Loyola hitting on 57.1 percent from the floor and 21-of-25 at the charity stripe, the Ramblers still couldn't complete the comeback bid.
Detroit, which shot 58.3 percent from the floor after intermission and connected 17-of-23 at the free-throw line, converted those many turnovers by the Ramblers into 23 points.
The Titans now move on to the second round of the tournament on Friday evening where they will take on sixth-seeded Youngstown State which beat Green Bay, 77-60, in the first round tonight.Game Notes
