Recap: DePaul vs. Providence

Rosemont, IL (Sports Network) - Freshman LaDontae Henton notched his eighth double-double of the season with a game-high 24 points and 15 rebounds, as the Providence Friars claimed a 73-71 win over DePaul in Big East Conference play at Allstate Arena.

Henton gave his team a two-point lead with three seconds remaining, and then on the other end he blocked a potential game-winning three-pointer by DePaul's Cleveland Melvin in the final second of regulation to seal the outcome.

Bryce Cotton poured in 19 points for the Friars (14-15, 3-13 Big East), who had lost five straight and nine of their previous 10 games entering today's contest. Vincent Council also recorded his eighth double-double, scoring 14 points and dishing out 11 assists.

The Blue Demons (11-17, 2-14) have now dropped eight in a row, despite four players in double figures and a double-double from Melvin (10 points, 12 rebounds). Moses Morgan scored a team-high 13 points off the bench in a losing effort.

After DePaul grabbed an early five-point lead, the teams traded buckets throughout the first half. Both teams shot 37 percent from the floor in the opening frame, although it was DePaul claiming a slim 37-35 halftime advantage.

Providence opened the second stanza with an 11-6 spurt to grab a 46-45 lead. The Friars later expanded that lead to 11 with 9:37 to play, but DePaul answered with a 22-11 run to tie the score, 71-71 with 35 seconds remaining in regulation. However, Henton then went to work with his late-game heroics to lift the Friars to victory.

The win marked Providence's first Big East road victory since Jan. 14, 2010, also against DePaul.
