PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) Martin Kaymer is pulling away at the U.S. Open.

On a warm, sunny morning at Pinehurst No. 2, Kaymer piled up three more birdies on his first nine holes of the second round Friday. That took his score to 8 under for the tournament, six strokes ahead of the field.

Kaymer opened the tournament with a 5-under 65, the lowest score in three U.S. Opens at this historic course in the North Carolina sand hills.

The 29-year-old German has nine birdies and one bogey through his first 27 holes.

Dustin Johnson and Brendon de Jonge are at 2 under and on the course. Graeme McDowell and Kevin Na had 2-under 68s in the opening rounds and tee off in the afternoon.Martin Kaymer Goes to 8 Under for Big Open Lead
