TROY, Ala. (WPMI) Jaguar right-hander Kevin Hill struck out a career-high 14 batters in a complete game to lead University of South Alabama baseball to a 7-3 win over Troy Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field.

Hill (4-5) allowed three runs on four hits and walked three to go along with his 14 strikeouts, which were the most by a Jaguar since D.D. Hanks struck out 14 at Arkansas-Little Rock on March 12, 2010.

"I knew I had to give my best effort tonight," Hill said. "I was able to keep their hitters off-balance with my off-speed stuff, and located my fastball when I had to. I just knew I had to come through for our seniors."

USA took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when LaBounty reached on a one-out single, and scored when a throwing error by Troy first baseman Matthew Howard sailed into left field on a pickoff attempt and left fielder Trevin Hall misplayed the ball in left-center field.

The Jags doubled their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth when Wojciechowski doubled to the left-center gap, and later scored on a two-out RBI single to left field by Knapp. Jones followed with a double down the left field line before Hindmon singled to center field to score Knapp and Jones and extend the USA lead to 4-0.

Holcomb drew a leadoff walk from Hill, and Jakob Nixon followed with a single to center field. A sacrifice bunt by Garrett Pitts moved both runners into scoring position before Ali Knowles delivered a two-out, two-run single to center field to cut the USA lead in half at 4-2.

USA loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth when Knapp reached on a hit by pitch, and Jones and Hindmon followed with consecutive singles. LaBounty then reached on a fielder's choice to third, but Nick Masonia's throw to home to cut down Knapp sailed wide and also allowed Jones to score and push the USA lead to 6-2. DeGallier followed with an RBI fielder's choice to second that scored Hindmon and extended the Jag lead to 7-2.

Troy added the game's final run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out RBI double to left field by Pitts.

"You could not ask for anything more out of Kevin Hill tonight," head coach Mark Calvi said. "He did a fantastic job, and saved the best for last. We needed every pitch he made, and every strikeout he got we needed them all. I was proud of the way he competed out there for his team.

"This was huge. There is no team in this league that has gone through the adversity and had the injuries that our program has had this year. For these kids not to quit, it's a testimony to their character and competitiveness. I have a lot of respect for these guys, and I have all year. I told them all season that I can live with the results as long as you compete, and our guys did."

South Alabama will return to action Wed., May 21, when it opens play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.Jags Extend Season with Win
