CHICKASAW, Ala. (WPMI) There's lot of excitement in Chickasaw as the Chieftains gear up for their first ever varsity football game.
The team is set to hit the gridiron at 7 p.m. in Chickasaw against the Flomaton Hurricanes.
Coach Ronnie Cottrell formally served as recruiting coordinator for both Florida State and Alabama but he said he still has butterflies about Friday night's game because of what it means to the entire community.
"It means a lot. There's going to be a lot of people there. A lot of people supporting us," said quarterback Chandler Rigdon.
The school held inaugural pep rallies on Friday, complete with a dance off, new cheers and friendly competitions to see which grade has the most spirit.
"I've coached at every level and I think I'm more nervous tonight then I've ever been. It's just that it's the first game and it is a historic event," said Cottrell.
Among the players ready to hit the field for the first time is middle linebacker Mike Williams.
"It means a lot to me because I live in a single house, single mom and this football stuff this is my goal and I am going to really chase it. And I think I can really do that at Chickasaw," said Williams.
This is Chickasaw's 3rd year as a school system, but the Chieftains couldn't compete in varsity football until this year.
Even though the team is young, the boys seem determined to make their small town proud.
"We're starting from scratch. Most of our team is going to be 8th, 9th, 10th graders and playing guys mostly seniors and juniors but I think they're going to play hard because they want this so badly," said Coach Cottrell.
Only two players on the team have ever played in a varsity game.
Friday's game will be played at John Dotson Memorial Park, which recently underwent around a $100,000 dollar transformation to get ready for the football season. Chickasaw Ready For First Football Season
