Spanish Fort hangs on for another close battle with Daphne

Updated: Sunday, September 1 2013, 11:00 AM CDT

The UTV 44 High School Game of the Week presented by Whataburger kicked off the 2013 high school football regular season with the Spanish Fort Toros vs. the Daphne Trojans.

The Toros won this match up last year 20-14 at Spanish Fort, this season the Toros.

Daphne struck first on their second possession, after the defense recovered a botched handoff from Toros quarterback Tyler Johnston.  Not able to find the end zone, the drive was capped off by a 36 yard field goal by Trojan kicker Dominick Brisolara.

The end of the 1st quarter saw the Toros get on the board when Johnston hooked up with Senior receiver Hunter Wood on a 2 yard touchdown pass.  Johnston would end up with 5 completions from 12 attempts and 51 yards.  Unable to convert the PAT, the 1st quarter ended with the Toros leading the Trojans 6-3.

Almost half way through the 2nd quarter, the Toros got on the board again, but this time Senior running back Michael Howard got in the end zone after a 17 yard run.  The Toros were unable to convert the 2-point conversion but extended their lead 12-3 over the Trojans.

With just over three minutes left in the half, Spanish Fort was in scoring position again, but kicker Alexander Theodore missed a 40 yard field goal.

The Trojan offense lead by Senior quarterback Zack Morgan finally got moving in trying to cut the Toros lead.   Morgan led a 71 yard drive and then was able to find Brandolin Perdue with an 8 yard touchdown reception.  With just :33 seconds left in the half, the Trojans cut the lead to 12-10.

The half ended in controversy as the Toros had the ball.  On what was thought to be the last play of the half, the Toros argued that they should still have more time.  While this was being discussed by officials, the Trojans had already left the field and headed to the locker room.  The officials put more time back on the clock and the Daphne had to come back for one more play.

The second half saw both teams make defensive adjustments that only allowed either offense limited momentum.  The Toros got it going with just over 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.  Johnston put together a 53 yard drive and on the 6 play of the drive, Johnston kept the ball and rushed 5 yards for the touchdown.  With the PAT good, the Toros lead 19-10.

On Daphne’s ensuing possession, Morgan put together a long drive for the Trojans.  The drive was 13 plays that took up just over six minutes.  Not to be out done, Morgan rushed for the Trojan touchdown.  The Toros lead was now only 2 points as the score was not 19-17.

The Toros could not run down enough of the clock and Daphne looked to get the ball one last time still only down by two points.  Morgan got the Trojans into field goal position with a 55 yard drive, but Brisolara could not convert the 27 yard field goal.

The game ended with the Trojans winning another close matchup 19-17 over the Toros.

Both teams open region play this week as Spanish Fort travels to Theodore to take on B.C. Rain, while the Trojans remains at home as they will host Baldwin County.

Tune in on Friday as the UTV44 High School Game of the Week heads to West Mobile for the Region 1 matchup between the Davidson Warriors and the Baker Hornets.
