Spanish Fort extends winning streak and moves on to Tuscaloosa

The final UTV 44 High School Game of the Week presented by Whataburger was on the Eastern Shore for the semifinal round of the AHSAA playoffs with the 5A matchup of Saraland Spartans vs. Spanish Fort Toros.  Winner moves on to Tuscaloosa to play in the state finals.

Spanish Fort got on the board first when Alexander Theodore mad a 35 yard field goal at the end of the 1st quarter, the Toros had the 3-0 lead.

Saraland looked to get on the board themselves in the start of the 2nd quarter, and they did when Mitchell Sanders caught a 40 yard pass for the score.  The Spartans now had the 7-3 lead in the 2nd quarter.

The end of the half saw the Toros looking to take the lead back.  After moving the offense down field, quarterback Tyler Johnston capped the drive by finding the end zone on a 1 yard run.  The Toros took the lead back 10-7 with just under three minutes left in the 1st half.

Late in the 3rd quarter, the Toros where driving until Saraland linebacker Skylar Mosley picked off Johnston and returned the interception to the Spanish Fort nine yard line.  The very next play, running back Leander Burrowes caught a nine yard touchdown pass to give the Spartans the lead again, 14-10.

Spanish Fort again had the ball moving down the field on the Spartans.  This time Johnston finished the drive with a 5 yard touchdown run for another lead change, Spanish Fort now had the 17-14 lead at the start of the 4th quarter.

The Toros were able to extend that lead late in the 4th quarter when running back Michael Howard ran the ball in to give the Toros the 24-14 lead.

The Toros defense was able to stop the Spartans from finding the end zone and went on the get the 24-14 victory.

Saraland finished up the year at 12-2.

Spanish Fort extends their winning streak and improves to 14-0 and will take on Muscle Shoals Thursday night at 7pm at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
