Auburn, Huntsville Claim AHSAA State Swimming Championships

RON INGRAM - AHSAA, Montgomery AL - UMS-Wright’s Paige Madden and Spain Park’s Will Freeman each set two AHSAA state records Saturday while Auburn and Huntsville captured AHSAA state swimming championships at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center on the campus of Auburn University.
     Auburn won the State Girls Championship with 239.2 points. Athens finished second with 154, followed by McGill-Toolen (145.4) in third place and Huntsville (140.0) in fourth place.  A total of 36 girls teams competed in the competition held Friday and Saturday.
      Huntsville’s boys totaled 261 points to claim the AHSAA Boys Championship. Bob Jones was second with 234 points, McGill-Toolen (204) finished third and Auburn (193) was fourth.
    A total of five state records were set in the girls competition and four were established in the boys’ division.   Freeman, a senior at Spain Park High School, set a new mark in the 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:37.31. Freeman also set a new mark in the grueling 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:27.36. His 500 time earned him automatic All-America status.
      Madden,  a freshman, set new marks in the 200-yard individual medley with a winning time of 2:04.13, and also set a new AHSAA mark, in the 100-yard butterfly clocking 55.37 seconds.
      The diving competition was held Friday with senior Pete Turnham of Auburn posting a 494.15 score to win the boys’ competition, and Fairhope sophomore Helen Legg totaling 383.15 to finish first in the girls’ competition.

100-Yard Freestyle:  Maria Reed, Balker, 51.18.


200-Yard Freestyle Relay: Athens, 1:38.50  (Kobie Melton, Lindsey Martin, Ellen Haapoja, Mallory Underwood).



BOYS
200-Yard Freestyle:
Will Freeman, Spain Park (1:37.31).
200-Yard IM: Foster Ballard, Elmore County, 1:50.24.


500-Yard Freestyle: Will Freeman, Spain Park, 4:27.36.


200-Yard Freestyle Relay: Bob Jones, 1:25.84 (Derek Sander, Chris Burrows, Andrey Tretyakov, Zach Harting).
