Mobile City Council Poised To Elect New President

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) When the Mobile City Council meets on Monday it will be the first time in the council's history that Reggie Copeland will not be one of its members.
In its first meeting the council will elect Copeland's replacement as Council President, a postion he held for the last 12 years. The two front runners for the position appear to be Council Vice President Fred Richardson and Councilwoman Gina Gregory. Both candidates have pubically stated interest in the position.
History is on the side of the man who will be the new council's most senior member. It is generally the practice of the council to move the Vice President up to the position of President when such an opening arises.
History would be made however if Gregory were chosen by her peers. Never in the history of the council has a woman served in a leadership position.
The council will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Monday to swear in their newest members and make their votes.
