(MOBILE, Ala.) - A popular downtown art curator is in critical condition after being shot three times in his front yard Wednesday night.
Wayne McNeil, a curator at the Centre For the Living Arts and Space 301, told police two men in black hooded sweatshirts approached and shot him in front of his Midtown home on the 600 block of Glenwood Street.
After attending a concert at Space 301, McNeil caught a ride home with a co-worker. After being dropped off, neighbors say McNeil was outside his home sitting on a swinging bench smoking a cigarette. The bench faces McNeil’s home rather than the street.
“[McNeil] isn’t sure of the intent, because he didn’t hear anyone coming up towards him,” said Chris Barazza, director of marketing at the Centre For the Living Arts. “It just seems senseless and random and we can’t figure out a rhyme or reason for it.”
Shot three times, McNeil still managed to stumble into his home and his roommate called 911. McNeil was conscious and alert when police arrived, and was able to tell them what happened.
Co-workers said McNeil got out of surgery early Thursday morning, and is still in the Intensive Care Unit at the University of South Alabama Medical Center.
