MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) The United States Bowling Congress is coming to the Port City in 2021. It will be the second largest event to ever be held in the city.
In 1994, Mobile hosted the USBC Men's Championship with more than 50,000 bowlers in town. It was the city's largest event.
In 2021, Mobile will host one of the largest women's sports events in the world, which is expected to draw in more than $40 million.
Janice Roberts is a competitive bowler. She stated the 2021 USBC Women's Championship coming to Mobile is a dream come true.
"Yes! It's a big deal for bowlers because you want to get up there you want to try to win," said Roberts.
She added, "I'm a member of and I plan to bowl in it."
More than 30,000 bowlers are expected to roll in town for the USBC Women's Championship. Mobile Sports Authority and the Mobile Bay Convention announced it will be held in the Port city in April until July at the Convention Center.
It will take nearly a month to transform the Convention Center in to a 48 lane bowling alley, but officials stated USBC will need help.
"They do invest a lot of the money back in to the community by buying local materials, local electricians. They'll use local carpenters," said Corte.
The economic impact does not stop there. Executive Director for the Mobile Sports Authority Danny Corte stated 600 new bowlers will come in town every week to stay three to four days at a time.
"We have hotels everywhere from all different rates, so bowlers will stay all over the county," said Corte.
Roberts stated, "Anything we can do to generate to bring money in to Mobile is a good thing."
