MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) - University of South Alabama President Gordon Moulton will take at least 3 months off from his role in the school's top position, an official confirmed to Local 15 News Thursday. The school's Board of Trustees is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting Friday to appoint a temporary president.

Gov. Robert Bentley called for the emergency meeting earlier in the week, a press office staff official confirmed. Bentley, who is on the board, will not be at the meeting, the representative said.

School spokesperson Keith Ayers said Thursday he fully expects Moulton to return to work after his time off. In October 2012, USA doctors successfully removed a tumor from Moutlon's brain. The tumor was malignant.

Ayers denied rumors a new surgery was the reason Moulton was taking the additional time off.

"We hope that he will heal quickly and that he'll come back with all of the energy and leadership abilities that he's always had and we're [wishing] him Godspeed," colleague and retiring staff member Dr. David Stearns.

Friday's meeting is open to the public and will be held in the Whiddon Administration Building at noon. Local 15 News will have a crew at the meeting. Look for updates on local15tv.com, the Local 15 News Facebook Page and Local 15 News Twitter Feed.
