METHUEN, Mass. (AP) - A puppy given away by its owner while in need of life-saving heart surgery now has a new home and money for the surgery.

And all that got done in less than a week.

The Eagle-Tribune reported Friday that a family in the Boston area has adopted the three-pound poodle-terrier mix, named Kisses.

The Methuen office of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also said it raised $10,000 for the surgery after posting a fundraiser page online. That was more than double the amount needed. The rest will help other homeless animals at the society's shelters.

The puppy was given up in Springfield after their owner flagged down an animal control van. Her condition was reported Jan. 25 by various media outlets and the donations poured in.
