(PRICHARD, Ala.)- Prichard residents marked Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a peace and unity march and ceremony to honor Dr. King.

Prichard held its inaugural Martin Luther King, Jr. march and rally Monday, creating a historic day for the city. Dozens attended the rally which began with passionate prayer and uplifting gospel songs.

"It's not a white thing or a black thing. It's not an Arab thing, but I feel like his main purpose for marching and preaching was to advocate unity," said Mark Moore.

Members of the community believe there is room for improvement when it comes to race relations and opportunities for African Americans.

A.J. Cooper was elected the first black Mayor of Prichard in 1972. He spoke to raise more awareness about inequality today.

Cooper said, "We prayed that the red sea of racism would part through to the promise land. The sea has not parted. The sun is not standing still, and we have not reached the promise land."

Residents stated more people of all ages and backgrounds should get involved in events like this to continue Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy.

"I feel like white people and Arab people should be here to let the dream speak for itself. Let the picture paint the dream," said Moore.
