(Mobile, Ala.)   A gunfight erupted on Springhill Avenue Friday morning, leaving one man wounded.

And that caused some very anxious moments for Rita Wheeler.

She learned the man who was wounded was her husband.

"I talked to him right before he want to surgery," she said. "They just want to find out if everything is inside."

It happened in the driveway of the den of the Comrades Mardi Gras Krewe.

The den was closed.

And Rita's husband, 52-year-old Raymond Wheeler, was working out back.

Wheeler is employed by the Mardi Gras Krewe to take care of the lawn behind their headquarters on Springhill Avenue.

It's something he does twice a month.

Carl Williamson is Wheelers brother, and says Wheeler talked to him just before being wheeled into the operating room.

"He said he was just down picking up leaves," said Williamson. "And when he looked up he was looking at a gun."

What happened next?

Well, according to both police and witnesses in the neighborhood, the bullets began to fly.

It turns out the surprise gunman wasn't the only one with a gun.

Wheeler had one, too.

A sheriff's department pistol permit handbook was plainly visible in his work truck.

And in a new development, Mobile Police announced late Friday that they arrested 17-year-old Romello Funches in connection with the shooting.

Funches is charged with two counts of Robbery First Degree and Assault Second Degree.

Rita Wheeler just wants to get her husband back home.

"He said he would be ok," she said. "He said it was ok."
