Naitonal Signing Day in the Port City

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Wednesday was National Signing Day, the day college football teams get a transfusion of their life blood, recruits.

Wednesday was the first day high school talent could sign with the colleges of their choice.

A handful of area players are headed for Southeaster Conference schools. The headliner Wednesday was McGill-Toolen quarterback Jason Smith.

He signed in a ceremony on campus Wednesday morning with four of his teammate. Smith was mister big play for the Yellow Jackets, combining for 33 touchdowns either passing or rushing.

Smith was everybody's player of the year in this part of the state. And he was named MVP of the Alabama-Mississippi All Star Game.

There was some thought he might be recruited as simply an athlete, but Smith said he is going to Auburn to be quarterback.
