(MOBILE, Ala.)   A Mobile man died after contracting the flu, according to local health officials. The Mobile County Health Department said a 34-year-old Mobile man died from complications of the flu early this week.

"He was admitted and by the time any treatment could be rendered, in less than 24 hours, he had passed away," said Director of Disease Control Monica Knight.

Health officials said he checked into the emergency room at a local hospital Sunday because he was not feeling well and experiencing flu like symptoms.

"He had other chronic health conditions. This was not just a flu death. It was a flu related death," said Knight.

Knight stated people dealing with medical problems already have a weaker immune system, making it that much harder to fight off the flu.

"So hopefully those individuals who have serious medical complications have gotten their flu shots," said Knight.

One native Mobilian said, "They said this year is the biggest outbreak they've seen in a really long and time and it scares you." She added, "You never think it's going to happen here until it does. I mean you never think it's going to happen, and then it happens to you."

Health officials advise you seek medical attention within 48 hours of experiencing flu like symptoms.
