MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Bishop State Community College is offering a special program to help TSA agents become better employees.
Transportation and Safety Administration agents are responsible for the safety of millions of passengers every year, yet studies show some have little education.
"Nationally, it's been reported they have the lowest education among some of the employees at the airport. So, this program is very important because they're becoming more educated," said Bishop State President Dr. James Lowe.
Bishop State Community College currently provides TSA agents with a special course created to make them better employees.
"(It) Enhances their knowledge of security procedures and recognition of explosives and improvised explosives devices," Federal Security Director Gail Linkins.
Thursday, nearly a dozen TSA agents graduated with associate degrees. School officials believe it is working. In 2012, Stephanie Clark, a Bishop State graduate was named T-S-A's employee of the year nationwide.
In fact for the past three years, the TSA employee of the year nationwide has been selected from Mobile Regional Airport.
"They combine both world class customer service with world class security, and they take that mission to heart," said Linkins.
Cindy Cane was named 2011 TSA employee of the year, and Ronald Ward received the TSA employee of the year award in 2010.
