MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) - The Mobile Police Department announced Friday they are looking to hire more service men and women.
The Police Department has more than 450 officers and they are accepting applications.
"People leave through out the year to go to other agencies or to change careers, obviously retire. So, we are filling those positions," said Public Information Officer Ashley Rains.
Rains stated the department will use money already in the city's budget to hire officers, some thing that comes just in time with the approval of the downtown Entertainment District.
"Officers that we hire in this round will of course be stationed in the first precinct at central events which is in charge of patrolling the downtown area and the new entertainment district," stated Rains.
So what are the requirements?
"New recruits need to have a GED or high school education; however, your pay grade increases depending on your education," said Rains.
Salaries range from $29,000 to $34,000 a year.
"Our recruits, once they are finished with Police Academy, they get assigned to precincts. You actually go on patrol when you come out the Police Academy which is 16 weeks," said Rains.
Officials said with the Port City's attractions, the city is growing and the Police Department needs to as well.
"The more officers we have, the more officers we have patrolling the streets, the less crime that's being committed," said Rains.
