(MOBILE, Ala.) - A police standoff at a residence in Mobile was resolved peacefully Tuesday night after police convinced the man barricading himself inside his home to surrender.

Mobile Police would not release the name of the 28-year-old man, and, at this time, he does not face any charges. Authorities said the man is mentally unstable.

Corporal Christopher Levy said the standoff began when police responded to a shots fired call just after four o'clock Tuesday afternoon.

"There was a 28-year-old male who was in the backyard of his residence on East Road, and he actually did fire a few shots," Levy said, "He then entered the residence, and barricaded himself inside."

Levy would not confirm with Local 15 News as to whether or not the man shot at or threatened police officers, though he said no police officers were harmed during the standoff.

Mobile Police surrounded a home on East Road near Malcolm Drive.

The home is near Dodge Elementary School. Mobile County School leaders said the school was put on lockdown Tuesday afternoon because of the situation. About 150 teachers and students were on campus for running club, after school care and Girl Scouts.

Levy said tactical teams and other police patrols spent hours talking to the man inside, and finally convinced him to surrender. Witnesses said police bombed the home with teargas.

"This man was not harmed," Levy said, "It has taken a while to get him to exit the residence but he has done that. He has some problems, and we're going to get him some help."

Levy said he credits tactical units and patrol officers for bringing the incident to a peaceful ending, citing countless hours of training in volatile situations like this.
