ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WPMI) The possibility of a shorter red snapper season this year has some local fishermen upset. Last year, snapper season was 40 days. This year, it could be cut to 27.
A public meeting was held Wednesday night at 6, with the Gulf of Mexico Management Council.
To say the anglers at the meeting were frustrated is an understatement. One fisherman said anglers need to stand up and band together to stop the feds from infringing on their fishing rights. He agreed with the environmentalists saying that we need to protect our fish from overfishing.
"We need to chart a new course. The way things are going right now, we don't have any fishing rights left. I'm fed up and I'm ready to do something, and I hope there are enough people down here that feel the same way I do," said recreational fisherman T.M. Wilson.
The quota of two fish per person would stay the same.
