MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) Two Mobile County commissioners are in the beginning stages of an investigation into the management and protocol at the Mobile County Animal Shelter after 49 dogs were put down due to distemper.

The dogs were euthanized Monday after shelter staff determined an infected dog was brought into the facility. Employees tell us the kennels were thoroughly cleaned and sat unused for 24 hours, before the pets were allowed back in.

Commissioners Connie Hudson and Jerry Carl say they will evaluate whether the best practice was used to contain the deadly virus, and determine why commissioners were not notified about it in a timely manner.

Based on the outcome of the investigation, Hudson and Carl will seek appropriate, corrective actions to deal with problems identified.
