(MOBILE, Ala.) - There is a somber mood on the campus of the University of South Alabama following the early morning shooting of a student Saturday by a campus police officer.
During a news conference Saturday, a USA spokesman offered details, saying when an unidentified officer came out, Collar was nude and acting erratically and charged the officer. They say that's when the officer shot the naked freshman in the chest.
"The officer fired one shot with his police side arm, which struck the chest of the assailant. The individual fell to the ground but got up once more before he collapsed and expired," campus spokesperson Keith Ayers said in Saturday's conference.
A close friend of Collar saw who saw him three hours before he was shot spoke out about the incident.
"He was clearly unarmed. There should have been actions before that taken taken, like either call for backup, use a taser, use mase, use something like less deadly force rather than straight to a gun"
Gil Collar was a wrestling standout at Wetumpka High School.
