BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - Biloxi's ranking in FEMA's Community Rating System has improved to a Class 5, which for those living in a flood zone means 25 percent lower flood insurance premiums.

The Sun Herald reports the city learned last week its rate dropped from Class 6 to Class 5. New rates go into effect in May.

The rating improved because of steps the city took to regulate construction in flood zones and educate residents on ways to minimize damage from flooding.

Kristin Greger, the city's CRS coordinator, said the rating means an additional 5 percent savings for residents in a flood zone and a 10 percent discount citywide.
