Mobile, Ala (WPMI) Threatening texts boiled over into the shooting of a 16-year-old girl outside her home on Marcus Drive Saturday evening.
The girl was shot once in the thigh, possibly from a ricochet, and is now at home on crutches and recovering. Fortunately, no one else was struck including two toddlers standing next to her during the shooting.
"It was an argument over a boy," Amanda Mwok, mother of the victim, told Local 15. "I can't believe these kids with guns. I can't believe someone would someone do this to my baby."
The girl told Local 15 they were inside her home when her friend began receiving angry text messages from an ex-boyfriend, saying "you [expletive] wit da wrong ppl" and "I will [expletive] hurt you lil [expletive] an yo whole fam."
That ex-boyfriend allegedly pulled up later in a red SUV with three other teenagers, telling the girls to come outside.
The shooting victim said she went outside with her friend, and her 3-year-old sister and 2-year-old brother followed them into the front yard. There was a brief physical confrontation between the ex-boyfriend and her friend, then a teenaged girl in the SUV started shouting "Shoot them, shoot them", according to witnesses.
One of the young men who was in the SUV allegedly aimed a small-caliber revolver toward the group of children about 15 feet away and opened fire. Witnesses said he fired five times, and was aiming low.
The girl who was shot told Local 15 she grabbed her little brother and sister and ducked behind a sedan parked in the front yard. She said she didn't initially feel any pain and didn't realize she was shot until the teens jumped back into the SUV and took off.
Mwok said they know who was in the SUV, and found a photo on-line of the shooter, but do not know his name.
