(MOBILE, Ala.) - Thursday the media was allowed to view the surveillance video that captured the deadly shooting of U.S.A. freshman Gil Collar.
Greg Peterson and Kym Thurman watched the video personally at the sheriff’s office.
It shows two minutes of a young man who was naked and appeared out of his right mind.
During the confrontation, Collar seemed to move aggressively toward the officer, not backing down.
Because this video will not be shown to the public anytime soon we wanted to give you an idea of what the media saw.
The surveillance video begins at 1:23 Saturday morning outside campus police headquarters.
The first thing you see is 18-year-old Gil collar walk into frame trying to open the police office door.
He doesn’t succeed so he walks out of frame.
Just a few seconds later Collar reenters and started pounding on the window seven times.
He leaves the frame again.
The next thing you see is 4-year veteran Trevis Austin come out the door and obviously sees the students and starts to back away.
Sheriff Sam Cochran says he continued to order the student to get down and to get back while backing up himself.
He eventually got caught by a bike rack and makes a turn.
The student is still coming at him.
The student gets within two or three feet of the officer.
That’s when the shot is fired into the student’s chest.
He collapsed, stayed down momentarily, got up and ran a couple feet and continues to pursue the officer.
About 23 seconds later he collapsed. He tried getting up a couple more times before dying.
