UTV 44 would like to recognize the Scholastic Athlete for Week #9
For the Murphy Panthers, Benjamin Hightower is a Senior with a 4.98 GPA. Benjamin is ranked #3 in his class. He is a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society and Math Honor. Benjamin is a member of the cross country
team where he received the Most Determined Award and the Panther Spirit Athletic Award. He also likes to play
the piano which earned him first place at the Mobile Music Teacher’s Association Sonata Competition along with a MMTA Merit Award and the Alabama District Piano Award for Excellence. He is a Boys State Appointment which allowed him to serve on the city
council. Benjamin has attended Camp Kletos along with having the IB Honor Pin. His plans are to attend either the United
States Air Force Academy or the United States Naval Academy and enter the field of Medicine and possibly focus on Emergency
Medicine/Surgery.
For the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets, Carmen Carlos, the daughter of Gary and Cecelia Carlos, is a Senior with a 4.25 GPA. Carmen is ranked #3 in her class and scored a 33 on her ACT. She serves as president of the Ambassador Club, along with being elected Homecoming Queen. Carmen is a member of Friends of Exceptional Children and helps the Servants of the Poor at the Little Sisters Lawn Party. Carmen is a member of the Yellow Jacket Cross Country and Track team. There she earned the Gatorade Runner of the Year three times. She is the #1 ranked runner in Alabama, all divisions in 6 events for the 2012 outdoor season. Her plans are to attend Vanderbilt University and run cross country and track.
