(MOBILE, Ala.) Tuesday was deadline day for Mobile Gas. ADEM gave the utility 14 days to implement a plan to clean up a nasty smell in Eight MIle.
Mobile Gas says it will bring in outside contractors to help clean up the mercaptan odor at a site off Cochran Road.
ADEM says they're not satisfied that Mobile Gas actually met the deadline.
According to ADEM, Mobile Gas was required to implement measures to abate the odors, not just develop a plan.
"The Department is reviewing all of the information associated with any failure to meet the established timeline and is moving forward with our enforcement process. We have several enforcement options that are available and we will choose the one
that is best suited to achieve our goal of abating and mitigating the odors in Eight Mile." says Scott Hughes, Spokesperson with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
Mobile Gas also issued a statement Tuesday.
"We understand area residents' frustrations. While it may seem that nothing much is being done. We have, in fact, been working on this matter for months now," says Kesshia Davis with Mobile Gas.
ADEM says it's now moving forward to the enforcement process.
ADEM could now issue a warning letter, a notice of violation, or issue an order that includes a civil penalty against Mobile Gas.
