Tonight’s UTV 44 High School Game of the Week presented by Whataburger saw the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets and the Davidson Warriors renew this once again region rivalry.
Davidson received the ball first, and senior quarterback Cam Jackson looked to get on the board first. The Warriors started on their own 21 yard line after the kickoff and drove all the way down into McGill territory. On the seventh play of the drive the Warriors fumbled the ball and McGill recovered it and started their first series on their own 12 yard line.
Neither team would get on the board until the middle of the first quarter, when Davidson scored the first touchdown of the game. Anthony Douglas put the Warriors ahead after a 17 yard touchdown run. That score capped off a 60 yard drive in nine plays.
Not to be outdone, McGill’s Jason Smith quickly led the Yellow Jackets down field for 58 yards and tie the game up at 7-7. Smith connected with Harrison Imsand down the middle of the field for a 31 yard touchdown pass.
Davidson then looked to go into halftime with the lead. The Warriors started their next drive on their own 20 yard line with just over six minutes left in the 1st half. 80 yards and five minutes later the Warriors took the lead after Jackson found the end zone on a 13 yard run. Davidson converted two 4th down conversions to keep the drive going, and they now had the 14-7 half time
lead.
McGill’s first possession of the 2nd half started on their own 33 yard line. With two 4th down conversions of their own, they tied the game up at 14-14 after Jason Smith ran for a 2 yard touchdown.
Neither quarterback was willing to back down or quit for their team. Two plays later Cam Jackson ripped off a 72 yard run for a score, the Warriors once again had the lead, now 21-14 in the 3rd quarter.
In the last half of the 3rd quarter, McGill still looking to tie the game back up, Smith was leading the Jackets on an eight play
forty yard drive when Davidson’s Dontae Williams met Jason Smith at the line of scrimmage and force the Jackets to turn the ball over on downs.
McGill was able to get the ball back and on the first play, Smith found Junior Chris Knowels for a 45 yard touchdown pass. The score was now tied up again at 21-21 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Davidson had the ball first in the 4th quarter, but not for long. On the third play of the drive, Philbert Marshall was able to intercept Jackson and return it 31 yards. The Jackets could not turn the interception into points as they had to punt six plays later.
With just over seven minutes left, the Warriors were looking to work the clock while trying to get a score.
Jackson led them 85 yards down field and ate up six minutes to find the end zone on his own. Jackson ended the night
with 205 yards on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns.
With only 1:01 left on the clock McGill got the ball back and started their drive on their 36 yard line. Working the clock, Smith moved the Jackets into Warrior territory quickly. With just :08 seconds left, Smith hooked up once again with Harrison Ismand who ran in the for the score. Instead of going for the tie and overtime, Head Coach Bart Sessions decided to go for two and the win. On the play, Smith rolled to the right and found the end zone for the 2 point conversion. McGill went on to win the game 29-28 over the Warriors. Smith finished the night with 117 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown; he was also 10 for 16 with 177 yards passing and 3 touchdowns.
McGill-Toolen (4-0; 3-0) heads across the bay as they face their former region rival, the Daphne Trojans (3-1; 3-0).
Davidson (3-1; 2-1) will host Williamson (0-4; 0-3).
