(MOBILE, Ala.) - 44 Alabama hospitals and clinics have received products from the facility believed to be responsible for a fungal meningitis outbreak.
The products came from the New England Compounding Center or NECC. These are other products besides the injectable steroids that have been linked to the meningitis.
None of these other products have been linked to any illnesses.
Public health officials have notified each facility in order to ensure that NECC products have been removed from their inventory and to discuss the process for contacting their patients.
The recalls of these other NECC products are based on an abundance of caution. The types of procedures where they could have been used include, but are not limited to, epidurals, joint injections, eye surgeries, and heart surgeries.
“Alabama health care facilities have had very limited exposure to NECC products, but individuals who have had certain medical procedures using these specific products are being notified,” said Dr. Donald Williamson of the Alabama Department of Public Health. “If you have had adverse reactions, contact your health care provider.”
Nineteen Alabama residents have received contaminated NECC steroid products, but they got them from procedures administered in Tennessee and Florida.
