(MOBILE, Ala.) LOCAL 15 News has been digging through crime reports, and found in the past year, murders in the 1st precinct, which includes downtown, are up more than 100 percent. Compared to this time last year, murders in the entire city are up by 65 percent.
Eighteen people have been murdered in Mobile this year. Six of those cases are still unsolved, including the death of Darius Longmire.
"He begged for his life. You had a kid that didn't do anything that was begging for his life," said his stepfather Andrew Rodgers.
We spoke with Mobilians who say they are concerned about the crime rate. Antoinette Mingo takes walks in the 1st precinct with her new baby, Joy.
"I don't feel safe, that's why I'm walking fast!"
Police Chief Williams says the department is working on ways to cut down on all violent crime.
"We are going to aggressively take over and control the streets of Mobile."
