Tonight’s UTV 44 High School Game of the Week presented by Whataburger traveled across the bay for the second straight week with a matchup between the Foley Lions and the Daphne Trojans.
The Trojans have won the last five meeting between the two teams, and Daphne jumped on the board first with their first possession. Quarterback T.J. Fleeton started the drive on the Trojan’s 41 yard line after a Foley punt. Four plays and 59 yards later,
Fleeton hooked up with Tamaruice Tolbert for 9 yard touchdown reception. The Trojans were on the board 7-0 in the
first quarter.
End of the first quarter saw the Lions tie the game up. Cedrix Reed scored his first touchdown of the night on a 7 yard run.
The second quarter didn’t see much scoring until the end. With less than five minutes left in the half, a bad snap by the Trojan special teams lead to a safety for the Lions. On the ensuing possessions by the Lions, they were able to march down field for 54 yards. Quarterback Maison Taylor found receiver Valonte Adams for a 9 yard TD reception. Maison finished the night 6/16 with 110 yards and the one touchdown pass.
Foley was able to recover a fumble by Tamaruice Tolbert with just over a minute left in the half. The Lions went into halftime with a 16-7 lead over the Trojans.
Neither offense was able to do much to start the 2nd half until the Trojans found some offense with just 8 minutes left in the
quarter. A 55 yard drive was capped off my running back Ronnie Davis finding the end zone on a 14 yard rush. The Trojans were now only down 16-14 with just over six minutes left in the quarter.
The Trojans next possession helped them take the lead back. Tyler Cook kicked a 32 yard field goal with 2:06 left in the 3rd quarter. The Trojans now lead the Lions 17-16.
The end of the 3rd quarter and start of the 4th saw Foley’s Cedrix Reed break out. Reed scored the three touchdowns for the Lions on their next three possessions. His second score of the night was on a 47 yard run, while his third score was on a 9 yard run. The Lions missed the 2 point conversion after that score and were now leading 29-17 10:33 left in the game.
Reed got his fourth score of the night after running for a 61 yard touchdown. Reed ended the night with 272 yards on 19 carries and 4 touchdowns. The Lions now had a 36-17 lead with 7:40 left in the game.
The Trojans didn’t go down without a fight. The offense put together a 71 yard drive which included a 25 yard reception by Wheylen Tolbert and a 35 yard reception by Horace Johnson. Fleeton finished the drive after a 1 yard plunge to cut the Lions lead to 12 points. The Trojans were now down 36-24 with 7 minutes left in the game.
The Lions got the ball back and started on their 47 yard line. Looking to add to their lead, the Lions were able to get a 34 yard field goal by Jose Mendoza. The Lions were now up 39-24 over the Trojans and just over 4 minutes left in the game.
The Trojans still not out, were looking to cut the lead again. With 2:12 left in the game Fleeton found receiver Chris Sain for a 25 yard touchdown reception. The Trojans were now only down 39-31.
With only 31 seconds left the Trojans were looking to try and tie the game up. Two plays later, Fleeton connected with Chris Sain for a 10 yard reception, Sain then pitched the ball to Wheylen Tolbert who went 25 yards for the score. Daphne needed to convert the 2 point conversion to tie the game and go to overtime. Once again Fleeton found Sain to convert the 2 points to send the game
in to overtime 39-39.
Foley got the ball first in overtime. Maison found Alontai Adams for the touchdown, but the Lions missed the extra point.
On Daphne’s second play of their possession, Fleeton found Wheylen Tolbert in the end zone to once again tie the game. Trojan kicker Tyler Cook was able to make the extra point and the Trojans won in overtime 46-45 over the Lions.
Foley (2-1; 1-1) will be on the road for the second straight week as they head to Enterprise to meet up with former Fairhope head coach David Faulkner.
Daphne (2-1; 2-0) will host new region foe Northview.
