MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A current employee and a former employee of Alabama's Corrections Department have been indicted in an identity theft case involving inmates' IDs.
The U.S. Justice Department announced Friday that corrections officer Bryant Thompson and former officer Quincy Walton, both of Montgomery, have been indicted on conspiracy and aggravated identity theft charges. Thompson also faces wire fraud charges and Walton faces theft charges.
Thompson is accused of obtaining the names and Social Security numbers of state inmates and causing false tax returns to be filed in those names. Walton is accused of cashing the checks.
The Federal Defenders Office is representing Walton. Executive director Christine Freeman said she's confident the case will find a just result. Attorneys for Thompson did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
