Irving, TX (Sports Network) - The continuing realignment of college athletics continued Thursday when Conference USA announced the additions of Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee State.
Conference USA has been raided recently, mostly by the Big East, who earlier this week plucked Tulane and East Carolina from the league.
Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee State will join Conference USA no later than July 1, 2014.
"We are excited to announce these two schools will join Conference USA," said Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky in a statement Thursday. "Besides being tremendous institutions, this is a logical move for us. These schools fit well within our strategic plan to be a major market, two-division conference that is student-athlete and fan friendly. We know they will make great contributions to our bright future."
Middle Tennessee and Florida Atlantic are both current members of the Sun Belt Conference. Middle Tennessee sponsors 17 NCAA Division I sports and its football program will play for the conference title on Saturday. FAU also has 17 sports.
Earlier this year, Conference USA added Charlotte, FIU, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Old Dominion and Texas-San Antonio to help offset the losses of Memphis, Houston, SMU and UCF to the Big East.
Current C-USA members that will remain in the league in 2014-15 include Marshall, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulsa, UAB and UTEP.
