(GULFPORT, Miss.) - A 42-year-old Gulfport man charged with murder in the brutal beating of his pregnant ex-girlfriend walked out of jail a free man after learning the charge had been dismissed.

A Harrison County grand jury last week declined to indict Kevin Crockett in the slaying of 28-year-old Taneka Johnson, who was beaten with a stick similar to a shovel handle on Nov. 8.

Crockett had been held at the Harrison County jail since his arrest.

The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/nyIis9 ) he was released from jail on Monday.

Michael Crosby, Crockett's attorney, said the grand jury "clearly did the right thing."

Crosby said there was no evidence linking his client to the crime.
