Most asthmatics and some nonasthmaticsmostly those with allergiessuffer from exercise-induced asthma. Exercise can trigger asthma when you breatherapidly through your mouth. This cold, dry air reaches the bronchial tubes without being warmed and humidified by passing through the nose. But people with asthma can and should exercise when they're not experiencing asthmatic symptoms. If you're asthmatic, consult a physician before beginning any exercise program. Start slowly and build yourself up to more intense exercise. Some activities are easier on asthmatics than others. Swimming is a good option and so are sports that require only short bursts of activity, such as softball or golfing. But activities that require continuous activity such as soccer, basketball or distance running can take its toll. Consider wearing a scarf or face mask when exercising in cold climates or when pollen levels are high, or exercise indoors. Sometimes using an inhaled medication prior to exercise can keep your airways open and allow you to lead a fully active lifestyle.
