The UTV44 High School Game of the Week presented by Whataburger headed into the quarterfinal round of the AHSAA playoffs, this matchup was between the Benjamin Russell Wildcats and the Spanish Fort Toros.
Winner of this game would be one game closer to going to Auburn for the AHSAA Super Six.
Spanish Fort got on the board first, when Joel Poe hooked up with Kristian Cotton for a touchdown pass in the 1st quarter. The Toros took a 7-0 lead over the Wildcats.
Benjamin Russell stuck back quickly; a gadget pass play to Lajarret Ford put the Wildcats into scoring position. Labrenikin Johnson finished the drive off when he caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Bryant Horn. The Wildcats tied the game up 7-7 still in
the 1st quarter.
Late in the first quarter, Spanish Fort’s Sammy Tolbert got the Toros back on top. A long scoring play by Tolbert gave Spanish Fort a 14-7 lead.
The Toros quickly extended their lead at the start of the 2nd quarter. Sam Harris caught a touchdown pass from Joel Poe. Spanish Fort now had a 21-7 lead over the Wildcats.
Trying to stay in the game the Wildcats were driving on the Toros. Benjamin Russell was aided by penalties against Spanish Fort.
Labrenikin Johnson had his second touchdown of the night and pulled the Wildcats within one score of the Toros down only 21-14 at halftime.
Both teams were held scoreless in the 3rd quarter even with Toros quarterback Joel Poe getting picked off by Tabias Russell.
In the fourth quarter, Benjamin Russell pulled closer to the Toros after the Wildcats kicked a field goal to bring the score to 21-17.
Late in the 4th quarter, Spanish Fort put together a long drive and took up a lot of the clock. The drive was capped off when Sam Harris caught his second touchdown of the night. That score gave the Toros a 28-17 lead and ended the game with the same
score.
Benjamin Russell finished this season with a 11-2 record.
The Toros improve to 12-1 and move on the semi-finals to host region foe St. Paul’s Saints.
